The musicians met while studying at the renowned Berklee School of Music and soon realised that they all share an interest in progressive hard music. But with the band's first release, the music scene was still a bit overwhelmed. Never before has anyone played such a combination of hard progressive metal and playful, almost jazzy elements. The success came with the second album. "Images And Words" brought the unexpected popularity and made the band world famous. Dream Theater don't make music according to a concept of success, they rather let themselves be guided by their instruments and like to follow paths that no one before them has taken. Because even after more than a quarter century of band history, the prog giants continue to find new ways to expand the boundaries of their music. Their double concept album "The Astonishing", released in 2016, was written with continuous accompaniment by an orchestra in the style of a musical. There has never been anything like this before and the musical effort that went into this masterpiece cannot be found in the overall discographies of many other bands.
